In a follow-up to the evolving story of Aussie company ICEE, PKN caught with the company at K where they were seeking manufacturers for their patented foldable EPS containers.

ICEE first launched the concept at Interpack in 2014, then developed a patented production process and a prototype machine for its flat moulded folding box.

The box is the result of several years of research and development of a process which forms an integrated hinge in an airpop (EPS) product during the moulding cycle.

Marketing director Voula Skinner told PKN that the company now has a machinery manufacturer in China, and the next step  is to secure licensing agreements with moulders.

MD Gary Skinner said they have now successfully moulded a living hinge in Piocelan, which is a hybrid bead made by Sekisui Plastics Pty Ltd, that’s an EPS and EPE blend rivalling EPP in terms of its durability but a fraction of the cost. It’s robust, lightweight and can be moulded in the same die and machine as ICEE’s standard EPS boxes.

While at K, the company was also talking to BASF about its new biofoam ecovio material, which had the potential to be applied to ICEE concept, overcoming barriers with some buyers who wanted a 'eco solution'.

One of the companies more recent launches is a variation ideal for online grocery delivery.
