In March this year, Cardia created new Biohybrid bag-in-bag water packaging that replaces traditional rigid plastic bulk water bottles.

This took a load off everyone involved in supplying, delivering and receiving drinking water for workplace coolers, literally and figuratively. It also reduced some of the stress the environment has to bear.

A month later, one of Cardia’s major American clients doubled its monthly orders of Cardia Biohybrid hygiene film.

Now, global protective packaging manufacturer, Sealed Air, has selected Cardia Compostable films for its new PakNatural Biodegradable Cushion Bags. Sealed Air’s business involves food safety and security, facility hygiene and product protection, and it is the company behind well known brands such as Bubble Wrap cushioning, Cryovac food packaging solutions and Diversey cleaning and hygiene solutions.

The PakNatural Biodegradable Cushion Bag is a versatile and mouldable cushioning bag made from renewable materials. The entire PakNatural cushion is certified biodegradable and compostable. So Cardia Compostable film became an obvious choice, allowing Sealed Air to deliver more environmentally friendly solutions of high performance, efficiency and verified biodegradability and compostability.

Cardia Bioplastics managing director, Frank Glatz, commented, “The main design goals by Sealed Air were to offer biodegradable and compostable packaging solutions made from renewable resources and to maintain the packaging integrity of the PakNatural Biodegradable Cushion Bag protective void fill cushions. Working closely with the Sealed Air team, we contributed to making their commitment to delivering more environmentally friendly packaging solutions of high performance to their customers a reality. Sealed Air is another example of a major market leader taking the initiative of introducing compostable and biodegradable solutions to their customers.”

The Cardia Compostable film had to meet precision performance standards during both the manufacture of the film and later at the point of use, when the film is converted to a cushion bag. These systems are fast and easy to operate and deliver cushions on demand for excellent protection and efficient void filling, while reducing material and shipping costs. For Sealed Air customers, this compostable film delivers robust performance in demanding conditions.

John Wolf, Sealed Air global vice president General Use Segment, stated, “When it comes to sustainability, we focus on the total life cycle of our products and the products we protect. Our strategy involves understanding the beginning and end of life, in addition to the performance during use. The new PakNatural Biodegradable Cushion Bags addresses all of these areas.”

Food & Drink Business

Fonterra has announced Anna Palairet is the new chief operating officer, having acted in the role since June 2023. CEO Miles Hurrell says Palairet has “extensive experience in operational, customer, sustainability, and sales roles”.

Food & Drink Business editor Kim Berry's take on the big news stories this week, and what caught her eye overseas. How will the Future Made in Australia Act actually be delivered? Shanghai trials traffic light labelling, and Solar Food, making protein out of (virtually) nothing at all, opens its commercial scale facility (that's it in the pic).

Food Frontier’s industry leading annual alternative proteins conference, AltProteins 24, is on in Melbourne on 10 October, with early bird tickets now available.
