From small things big things grow. Nina Nguyen's idea to make moisture moisture resistant and sturdy boxes to help her parents on their vegetable farm led to the creation of Pakko in 2017, to numerous awards since its founding, and last night, to winning the national 2022 Telstra Best of Business Progressing Australia Award for Pakko.

The award recognises Nguyen's commitment to creating a blueprint for a manufacturing renaissance in Australia. The judges said that Pakko recognised a lack of local manufacturing in its industry in Australia was making it difficult for businesses to grow.

Commenting on the win, Nguyen told PKN, "I am so proud to represent and be a part of the Australian Manufacturing Industry, and also Print & Packaging. Winning the National Telstra Award for Progessing Australia is a testament to the commitment and dedication of our team at Pakko.

"Throughout our packaging journey, we have met every challenge head on using innovation to bring new ideas to elevate Australian Made packaging."

"We believe in Australian Made and we have the capabilities, talent and the innovation to be global leaders. Winning this award will keep us elevated to continuing and developing packaging that will exceed expectations while always suprising and delighting our customers, because we know a box isn't just a box!"

“A huge thank you to everyone at Telstra and to all the other State and National Finalists.”

After she won the Young Packaging Professional of the Year Award in 2021, PKN spoke to Nina Nguyen on The PKN Podcast, Episode 26,. You can also read more about the company here and here.

Food & Drink Business

Fonterra has announced Anna Palairet is the new chief operating officer, having acted in the role since June 2023. CEO Miles Hurrell says Palairet has “extensive experience in operational, customer, sustainability, and sales roles”.

Food & Drink Business editor Kim Berry's take on the big news stories this week, and what caught her eye overseas. How will the Future Made in Australia Act actually be delivered? Shanghai trials traffic light labelling, and Solar Food, making protein out of (virtually) nothing at all, opens its commercial scale facility (that's it in the pic).

Food Frontier’s industry leading annual alternative proteins conference, AltProteins 24, is on in Melbourne on 10 October, with early bird tickets now available.
