The 2020 WorldStar Packaging Awards winners have been announced, with a record eleven Australian and New Zealand companies to be recognised for packaging innovation across six categories at a gala ceremony during interpack 2020.

The prestigious WorldStar Packaging Awards program is run by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO). Judging took place in Indonesia in November where representatives from 36 packaging associations, all members of WPO, assessed 321 packaging projects from 36 countries.

The ANZ contingent of winners combined received the third highest number of WorldStar Packaging Awards behind Japan and China. (See all ANZ winners in our gallery above).

Commenting on the record win, Nerida Kelton, executive director of The Australian Institute of Packaging, said: “This is incredible recognition for the annual Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards program, which is the exclusive feeder program for the two countries into the WorldStar Packaging Awards.”

The 2020 WorldStar Packaging Award winners for ANZ are:

Currie Group for its new transformational printing technology for packaging that showcases high-end printing, finishing, coding, marking and AR technology driving awareness to The Australian Rhino Project (TARP). (Category: Labelling & Decoration)

Danone ELN NZ Supply Point for its sachet multipack for both Aptamil and Karicare Infant Formula ranges for sale in Australia and New Zealand (Category: Food)

The Australia and New Zealand winners will be presented with their trophies at the 2020 WorldStar Packaging Awards at interpack in Dusseldorf, Germany on 8 May. PKN will be there.

Fonterra has announced Anna Palairet is the new chief operating officer, having acted in the role since June 2023. CEO Miles Hurrell says Palairet has “extensive experience in operational, customer, sustainability, and sales roles”.

Food & Drink Business editor Kim Berry's take on the big news stories this week, and what caught her eye overseas. How will the Future Made in Australia Act actually be delivered? Shanghai trials traffic light labelling, and Solar Food, making protein out of (virtually) nothing at all, opens its commercial scale facility (that's it in the pic).

Food Frontier’s industry leading annual alternative proteins conference, AltProteins 24, is on in Melbourne on 10 October, with early bird tickets now available.
