Visy reached an average of 70 per cent recycled glass content in its locally made bottles and jars in New Zealand in 2025, meeting what it describes as an industry leading target for the second consecutive year.
First achieved in 2024, the result reflects the company’s glass recycling and manufacturing operations in New Zealand, which it says support a strong, local and secure supply chain for wineries and food and beverage businesses.
Visy recycles glass collected from 50 councils across the country and remanufactures it into more than 700 million bottles and jars. The company says high-quality kerbside colour sorted glass has helped lift recovery rates, supporting progress towards and consistent achievement of the 70 per cent recycled content target.
Glass packaging produced with 70 per cent recycled content can be up to 30 per cent less greenhouse gas intensive than glass made without recycled material.
Aaron Ashby, newly appointed country lead for New Zealand at Visy, said local recycling and manufacturing were critical to supporting local brands.
“New Zealand makes some of the best food and beverages in the world, it deserves the best bottles and jars,” he said.
“Kiwi businesses can’t rely solely on imported packaging, it’s critical for export and getting their product on supermarket shelves.
“We’re making some of the most sustainable glass packaging in the world, right here in New Zealand.”
