L’Or, Moccona, and TerraCycle have invited consumers to sign up to be public drop-off locations for used coffee capsules, as part of a scheme to divert more waste from landfill.

The L’Or and Moccona Capsules Recycling Programme allows people to collect and ship their used coffee capsules to TerraCycle at no charge; the capsules are then used to create new products.

According to Justine Callens, brand manager at L’Or, the move to allow Australians to be public drop-off points for capsules is a significant step forward for the company’s environmental goals.

“Our aluminium capsules are designed to preserve the coffee aromas and freshness. L’Or is proud to partner with TerraCycle to make our coffee capsules recyclable and to encourage sustainable ways of living,” she said. “The launch of our public drop-off network is the next step in providing a recycling solution to our customers and diverting as many of our products from landfill as possible.”

The capsules, once collected, are shredded to separate the aluminium from the coffee grounds; the aluminium is then melted down to be reused. According to Jean Bailliard, general manager of TerraCycle Australia and New Zealand, TerraCycle has diverted 3.7 billion pieces of non-recyclable waste from landfill and incineration worldwide, with some 64 million people collecting waste in its free recycling programmes.

“TerraCycle is excited to launch the public drop-off locations for L’Or and Moccona coffee capsules and tackle the coffee capsule waste issue head-on,” said Bailliard. “By keeping these products out of landfill, Australians are saving the environment and helping TerraCycle to ‘eliminate the idea of waste’.”
