Supply chain solutions company CHEP won gold and silver for its Retail Display Pallet and Retail Modular Pallet at the 2016 POPAI Marketing at Retail Awards.

This is the first year CHEP participated in the POPAI Awards for Australia and New Zealand.

The awards reflect the environmental benefits of CHEP's products in the distribution and merchandising of beverages.

Both platforms are designed to move products from the manufacturer to the retail floor through a one-touch solution.

Development and production of the RDP/BT (Retail Display Pallet/ Beverage Tray) system delivers sustainability benefits to all parts of the supply chain, according to the company.

As part of the Circular Economy, there are share and re-use benefits that provide an efficient solution for distributing carbonated soft drinks to the end user.

The BT and RDP is a one-touch solution, where the same packaging is used for transportation, retail display and storage of products, removing multiple product handling.

It streamlines the transport process from the manufacturer to the retail floor without further packing or unpacking.

BTs are designed to reduce environmental impact of the beverage supply chain, eliminating 1250 tonnes of one-way cardboard packaging waste each year.

The lightweight, stackable tray design minimises transport fuel use and associated greenhouse gas emissions.

Around 65 per cent of retail supply chain costs occur in the short distance from unpacking products in the loading dock to supermarket shelf display, according to CHEP.

Together with the movement from the distribution centre, it is commonly known as the ‘last mile’ and is the current battleground for innovation in the quest to gain efficiency, improve environmental impact, improve availability and promote sales.

As for the Retail Modular Pallet, CHEP's client was challenged to develop a solution that would maintain the range, continue the benefits of replenishment; release space for other categories; and have minimal disruption in the supply chain.

By re-thinking the current environment, CHEP designed a solution that met the category objectives of all stakeholders.

Retail Modular Pallets (RMPs) are designed to take products directly from the manufacturer to the retail floor as a one-touch solution, fully-stocked and ready to go.

It also has a unique interlocking pin, allowing flexibility to use as a half or full-sized solution to meet category objectives; improves on-shelf availability; generates greater supply chain efficiencies; maximises manual handling efficiencies; fits in with existing production processes; reduces product damage; effectively increases brand presence; and improves the customer experience.

In addition, the RMP provides sustainability benefits through a share and re-use solution, removing the need for one-way cardboard packaging.
