Amcor has invested in a new production line at its Flexibles site in Lugo di Vicenza, Italy, expanding production of high-barrier recycle-ready films used in flexible packaging.

The expanded facility is dedicated to producing high-barrier films for packaging formats including lidding and pouches used across food, beverage, pet food and healthcare applications. This includes the company’s AmLite HeatFlex material for retort (high heat) applications.

According to the company, the material is designed to achieve recyclability while maintaining barrier performance, supporting brands working towards sustainability targets and upcoming regulatory requirements.

The extension covers nearly 7,000m² and includes infrastructure supporting different stages of the high-barrier film production process. The expansion features a quality control laboratory and an automated high-density warehouse with temperature-controlled chambers used for curing the material.

Elena Peron, plant general manager at Amcor Flexibles Lugo, said the investment aligns with the company’s goal of making its packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable.

“This new facility is the result of Amcor’s pledge to develop all our packaging to be recyclable, reusable or compostable. This expansion, combined with Amcor team’s expertise, will support our customers in making the switch to recycle-ready packaging and contribute to a more circular packaging industry,” Peron said.

The company said demand for recyclable packaging is increasing as regulation evolves, including the European Union’s Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation, which requires brands to transition to recycle-ready packaging by 2030.
