One of Pernod Ricard Winemakers' greatest initiatives has been its Sustainable Packaging Toolkit.

“It is a key part of our induction and training processes for relevant staff, with all teams in marketing, sales, PDM, and purchasing departments required to complete the toolkit,” says sustainability manager Stephen Cook.

The training helps teams keep sustainability considerations front-of-mind, and is underpinned by an ongoing communications program. The company's monthly Best Practice Bulletin reminds teams to incorporate sustainable considerations into their daily processes, and uploads this onto internal social media so it's available to all teams globally.

“This high level of internal engagement has assisted us in exceeding our waste reduction targets for 2014,” says Cook.

“A collaborative initiative with Resource Co. saw the introduction of a BioBin and a more active waste management program, enabling Pernod Ricard Winemakers to reduce waste to landfill by over 70 per cent on 2012 figures. This ongoing relationship has also supported improved recycling rates, with over 96 per cent of separated materials recovered.”

Strong relationships with the supply chain have also helped Pernod Ricard Winemakers in reaching its APC targets. Clauses to buy recycled content are consistently included in supply contracts while additional materials containing recycled content have been identified using the EcoBuy website. Pernod Ricard Winemakers has been consistently involved in collaborating with its supply chain on identifying shared value sustainable packaging projects, working with organisations including Amcor, Orora, Portovin and O-I Adelaide.

The company has also been active in reducing litter in its local environment. In 2014, Pernod Ricard Winemakers used funding from Zero Waste and the APC to install bin stations along the Jack Bobridge bike track in the Barossa Valley. Litter in the surrounding area has been continually monitored since the installation, to ensure the bins are effectively located.

Pernod Ricard Winemakers has been a signatory to the APC for over 10 years. Headquartered in Sydney, its portfolio covers multiple countries of origin, with over 2000 employees based across five continents.
