One in every three beverage cartons is made from materials produced by Finnish company, Stora Enso, the “global rethinker of the paper, biomaterials, wood products and packaging industry”.

It has been has been manufacturing high quality packaging boards since the 1940s and now operates in 35 countries.

One month ago, for example, Montes del Plata, Stora Enso's 50/50 joint operation with the Chilean pulp producer, Arauco, officially opened its industrial complex located in Punta Pereira, Uruguay.  The total investment of the mill amounted to AU$2,615 million, with an additional AU$271 million in the port, making it the country´s largest private investment in history.

Here in Australia, Stora Enso has created a partnership with BJ Ball Packaging, the leading packaging board distributor and converter in Australasia. BJ Ball began in Australia in 1918. Its operational reach now extends from New Zealand to Hong Kong including Australia, the Pacific Islands and South East Asia.

“We have every confidence that significant supply chain benefits will be realised and you will be the beneficiary. Stora Enso products are superior to anything available in the market. Improved yields, improved printability due to surface treatment and now a stocking program that provides you with a JIT service locally,” the company stated in its announcement.

The company’s flagship product in its renewable range, for example, is Tambrite, a first choice throughout the world due to its value, runnability and performance in its key end-use segments: pharmaceutical packaging, food packaging and chocolate packaging.

Tambrite is under continuous development and this has resulted in excellent stiffness and bulk attributes and enhanced environmental responisibility. The board has a good visual appearance and performs well in printing and converting processes including digital printing. In addition, both laser and inkjet coding can be used, as well as Braille embossing and other special finishing effects. Tambrite is chosen in food packaging for its robustness. It is also used for folding cartons for chocolate and confectioneries. There is a Tambrite for fast food packaging with no added OBA (Optical Brightening Agents).
