Automation control company SMC Pneumatics recently held an open day to mark the launch of its South Australia Distribution Centre.

Customers came to view the upgraded facilities and attend a series of product and industry presentations.

The Japanese-owned company established its first subsidiary outside of Japan, in Australia, just over 50 years ago.

Today, SMC Australia/New Zealand has 10 branches and employs over 200 people in the region.

The Victoria branch of SMC was recently upgraded to re-purpose the branch to become a Central Distribution Warehouse for the region.

The 7327m2 land, together with the 3049m2 building, is owned by SMC and has plenty of space for expansion.

The local stockholding of this branch alone was tripled to enable them to supply same-day delivery of standard parts to customers in Victoria, and overnight delivery to South Australia and Tasmania.

The facility includes a warehouse with large local stock holding, training facility with up-to-date training models, and an engineering and design department.

Australia has earned its stripes as a nation of committed snackers, but this love affair with snacks isn’t without its quirks. Mintel Food & Drink associate director, Cormac Henry, says its research shows while Australians are chasing healthier options, cravings for indulgent treats remains strong.

Bega Groups says following a 12-month review, the lack of a buyer and ongoing annual operating losses of $5-10 million are behind its decision to wind down and close peanut processing business, Peanut Company of Australia (PGA). Bega acquired the company in 2017.
