Polyethylene and polymers maker Qenos hosted a safety, health and environment seminar in a move to foster best practice in Australian manufacturing.
Held in Sydney last month, the meeting involved key customers and peers and focused on collaborating and maintaining best practice in a variety of industries.
Qenos is one of Australia’s biggest supply chains, contributing over $1 billion to Australian manufacturing in operational safety and environmental protection.
“Our industry is changing and so are we," the company's safety, health and environment (SHE) manager Rob Berton said.
"There are a number of key elements, such as leadership, relationships and knowledge sharing, that have helped Qenos build up a continuous SHE improvement culture.
"We are pleased to be able to share this accumulated knowledge with our customers and peers within the industry.”
Qenos representatives also gave attendees practical examples of best practice SHE processes.
Botany product manager Magdy Rizk spoke on tackling the issue of manual handling from a Qenos perspective, with case studies whereby manual handling risks and safety issues were identified.
The group came up with ideas to address these issues, and improve overall safety.
According to the Plastic and Chemicals Industry Australia (PACIA), the plastics and chemicals sector is the second largest manufacturing industry in Australia, providing an industry value-add of $11.6 billion.
With Australia currently hosting over 109 industries, there is an ongoing need for skilled SHE professionals to operate plants, drive productivity, and develop and support health and safety best practices.
