The winners of the 2018 Packaging & Processing Innovation and Design Awards (PIDA) for Australia and New Zealand were announced in front of 500 people during a gala dinner at the Marriott Hotel Surfers Paradise, Queensland last night.

The PIDA Awards were held this year in conjunction with the international WorldStar Packaging Awards, which saw over 22 countries in attendance to also collect their awards for 2018.

The 2018 Packaging & Processing Innovation & Design Awards (PIDA) have been designed to recognise companies and individuals who are making a significant difference in their field across Australia and New Zealand.

The PIDA Awards are the exclusive feeder program for the prestigious WorldStar Packaging Awards.

2018 Design Innovation of the Year Award - Beverage Category

Joint winners are: 8Kangaroos by ILNAM Estate and Polatote by Lactote.

A High Commendation was awarded to Crush Mate Bottles by LION Dairy & Drinks.

The Machinery & Equipment winner was Container Deposit Systems Australia (CDSA) Vision & Sorting System by SAGE Automation.

2018 Design Innovation of the Year Award – Food Category

The winner of this category was the Radix Nutrition foil packaging breakfast pouch by Cas-Pak products.

A High Commendation was awarded to the Grape N’Go 100% recyclable PET-based resealable Fresh Lid by Result Packaging.

The Machinery & Equipment winner was the Scott LEAP Suite of Technologies fully-integrated lamb processing system developed by Scott Automation & Robotics in conjunction with Silverfern Farms and Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA).

2018 Design Innovation of the Year Award – Health, Beauty & Wellness

The winner in this category was the flip-cap closure with ring-peel induction seal liner by West Wadding.

2018 Design Innovation of the Year Award – Domestic & Household

The winner in this category was the Precise Pour for continuous pour, anti-clog and tamper-evidence by Caps and Closures.

A High Commendation was awarded to Animal Instinct’s Feed My Fur Baby by OJI Fibre Solutions' easy-to-open, re-sealable corrugated solution with scoop.

2018 Sustainable Packaging Design Award

The winner of the Sustainable Materials & Packaging Award was awarded the custom EcodEX packaging environmental assessment valued at $10,000.

The Materials & Packaging winner was ICEE Containers biofoam PLA insulated boxes.

A High Commendation was awarded to the BioCane range for the foodservice industry by BioPak.

The Machinery & Equipment Winner was CogniPRO Link for the meat processing industry by Sealed Air Australia.

2018 Industry Packaging Professional of the Year Award

The winner in this category was Craig Wellman FAIP, CEO of Wellman Packaging.

2018 APPMA Scholarship

The APPMA scholarship winner was Nathan Leong MAIP, a packaging and product technologist at Primo Smallgoods.

2018 Packaging Council of New Zealand Scholarship

The NZ Packaging Council scholarship winner was Jaco Scheepers, a packaging technologist at Synlait Milk.

2018 Young Packaging Professional of the Year Award

The winner in this category was Regan Foster AAIP, director of Omniverse Foster Packaging.

Food & Drink Business

Entries are now open for the annual Melbourne Royal Australian Food Awards. Open to commercial food producers of all sizes, it is one of the largest programs of its kind. 

Victorian brewery, Bodriggy Brewing Co, is the first brewery in the state to achieve carbon-neutral certification and only the second in Australia to do so. The independent Abbotsford-based brewery achieved certification under the federal government’s Climate Active program.

According to Rabobank data, Australian consumers are facing higher chocolate prices heading into Easter, with retail chocolate prices up 8.8 per cent on the previous year as global cocoa prices soar.
