A luxury packaging designer has introduced a new packaging concept using printed electronics that allows the pack to play audio content.

Leo Luxe Packaging uses a rigid box with embedded audio circuits that are laminated to the paper which is wrapped to the box hinge lid.

Mechanical switches and conventional wiring have been eliminated, providing a cost-effective solution to audio consumer interactions, says the company.

By pressing of one of three buttons printed on the pack front, the consumer activates a short audio message. The clip can comprise a range of creative ideas, from reinforcing the features and benefits of the product, directions for use, a product endorsement, or a familiar song or jingle.

The opportunity is not limited to audio, and future developments could include LED lights or video content, according to the makers.

In other developments, a roll-fed aseptic carton packaging material supplier has developed an individually traceable milk carton with unique QR codes; a pilot study has shown that edible, covert tags can be used to check whether tablets and capsules are genuine; and new 'e ink' technology offers an on-pack visual solution.
