A beauty care product using sustainable aluminium aerosol packaging has been recognised in this year's World Aluminium Aerosol Can Awards.
Twelve editors from four continents (including PKN's editor) voted and chose winners in two categories: cans that are already on the market, and prototypes.
The Fa ReAl Mystic Moments can produced by Ball Corporation and Henkel Beauty Care was the winner in the category for aluminium cans already on the market.
The Fa ReAl can is ultra lightweight at 20 grams, and contains 25 per cent recycled aluminium content. The metal alloy is stronger and lighter, without affecting the package integrity.
For a 150- and 200-millilitre sized can, it is considered the lightest on the market. The use of lighter weight ReAl technology enables a product carbon footprint reduction of about 12 per cent. And despite the increased alloy strength, the producer developed a container with a deep shape to produce a can with a distinctive shelf presence.
In the prototype category, the Evolution Mini Shape, a can from Swiss manufacturer Nussbaum branded with Nussbaum Sun Spray 50ml, was the winner.
Its ergonomically shaped profile offers a travel-size solution for applications such as cosmetics, care, pharmaceutical, food and technical products. The persuasive impact of the photorealistic image was achieved with the help of laser engraved printing plates. The Evolution Range is available in various diameters for volumes from 50 to 250ml. The Evolution Mini Can, with its 35mm diameter, is a suitable size for contents of 75ml; a volume that suits the new compressed can technology.
In other aerosol news, following years of sustained growth, the global market for aluminium aerosol cans declined in the first half of 2015 by one per cent, year on year, according to the international aluminium aerosol container manufacturers group Aerobal.
Aerobal secretary general Gregor Spengler said the result was “only natural”.
“After years of unabated growth it's only natural there is consolidation in the market that can lead to a slight decline in demand and production,” he said.
Aerobal is also quite confident when it comes to the question of competition from plastic aerosol cans, with these only used in a few niche markets so far.
However, aluminium aerosol can manufacturers are prepared to counter this potential alternative with the benefits of the aluminium can. As a recognised permanent material it offers unlimited recyclability without any loss in quality, according to Aerobal.
