Ardagh has given Norwegian seafood company, King Oscar a very merry Christmas. First, the standout can’s King Oscar Easy Peel lid won Silver in Ends, Caps & Closures at the Canmaker Summit in Hong Kong.

Then, the piece de resistance. At the Oscar de l’Emballage 2014 the can won an Oscar for best product in metal.  

The jury was particularly impressed with Ardagh’s Easy Peel aluminium opening solution that gives the consumer an easy and quicker means of opening the can while significantly reducing any risk of spatter.

Also praised were the weight reduction, 50% lighter than a standard end, its safety with no sharp edges to contend with, and its role in rejuvenating the club mackerel can category.

Patrick Savouré, commercial director seafood at Ardagh Group’s metal division stated, “The awards demonstrate that striking design and excellent functionality are a perfect combination.”

The can’s design, created by brand agency LFH, uses an interlocking stylised fish pattern to underpin King Oscar’s positioning as seafood experts. It also features a badge lock-up to hold all key product information, including a communication to remind consumers King Oscar's 110 years of Norwegian heritage and tradition.

King Oscar has two factories in Poland and Norway, filling 90 million cans per year and sales worth $97.5 million in 2013.

Bega Group will shut its cheese processing and packaging plant in Strathmerton, Victoria, to consolidate operations at its Ridge Street factory in Bega. The decision impacts around 300 employees in Strathmerton and will create 100 jobs in Bega.

The Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) chief operating officer, Colm Maguire, has been appointed CEO after acting in the role since mid-January when Tanya Barden stepped down.

The awards were presented on Thursday 8 May during a long lunch at Linseed House, Sydney, to a room of over 150 industry leaders abuzz with excitement.
