“The Australian Business Award for Sustainability recognises organisations that execute initiatives that demonstrate leadership and commitment to sustainable business practices.”

SITA Australia has won a 2014 Australian Business Award for Sustainability for its Australian-first de-packaging unit.

The de-packaging unit at Camellia Resource Recovery and Treatment Facility in Western Sydney separates packaging from its contents to maximise organic resource recovery and divert these valuable resources from landfill. It enables the recycling of both food packaging and its contents.

SITA also received a 2013 Australian Business Award for Sustainability for its innovative waste management services for Taronga Zoo, that helped maximise recycling and divert waste from landfill. The Australian Business Awards are a national awards program and now in their ninth year. There are ten categories:

Enterprise, Innovation, Technology, Marketing Excellence, Brand Excellence, Service Excellence, Project Management, Community Contribution, Human Resource Management and Sustainability.

Since launch, SITA’s de-packaging unit has been helping some of Australia’s largest food manufacturers and retailers achieve their sustainability goals. The unit currently recovers valuable resources from consumer products that can no longer be sold such as pasta meals, sauce bottles, powdered baby formula, coffee products, tea bags and pet food.

General manager of national key accounts, Peter Stephens stated, “SITA is the only waste management company in Australia to offer this innovative de-packaging solution, which transforms food waste into valuable resources while helping our customers reduce waste disposal costs.

“Through this innovative resource recovery solution, products such as plastic coffee capsules, which previously would have been sent directly to landfill, are processed to allow the packaging to be recycled while the actual coffee is transformed into nutrient-rich compost.

“Finding smart and reliable solutions to help our customers achieve their sustainability goals is at the heart of what we do, so we are incredibly proud to be formally acknowledged with this prestigious award.”
