The Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) met with government officials this week to discuss the latest goals relating to sustainable packaging.

The Government Officials Group (GOG) meeting reaffirmed the unique co-regulatory relationship the APCO has with government and industry.

APCO's newly appointed CEO, Brooke Donnelly, said all government jurisdictions endorsed the 2017 Covenant, and the government was strongly committed to environmental sustainability in the packaging sector.

"This, combined with our close to 1,000 Australian business members, means we have a unique opportunity to have a real impact on reducing the environmental effect of packaging in Australia,” she said.

In the meeting, the GOG discussed and set plans relating to NEPM reporting requirements and enforcement protocols. This includes addressing the issue of those not paying their share (free riders).

APCO reported on its progress over the last six months, including the launch of its new member management software and website to enable greater knowledge sharing, industry participation, and robust reporting.

It also updated government on various strategic projects, such as a new Sustainability Reporting Tool. These changes will enable companies to set their own objectives within a framework that drives successful sustainable packaging outcomes.

Government jurisdictions in attendance were New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Australian Capital Territory, Tasmania and the Federal Government.
