Organisers of this year's World Congress and Exhibition on Active & Intelligent Packaging,  have announced the list of speakers, including representatives of some of the world's major retailing and packaging companies, who will address the event in Nuremberg, Germany, in September.

Keynote presentations will be delivered by representatives of such global companies as UK retail chain Marks & Spencer, chemicals and pharmaceutical giant Bayer and research company KMPG.

The director of the Active and Intelligent Packaging Industry Association (AIPIA), Eef de Ferrante, said the speaking roster was chosen to reflect all aspects of the market for active and intelligent packaging (A&IP).

“We have been careful to attract speakers from across the entire spectrum of A&IP technologies,” he said.

“Whether your interest is in smart blisters, extending shelf life, anti-counterfeiting, condition indicators, printed electronics, marketing opportunities or even nano-packaging and fighting food waste, you will find it at the Congress.

“Further, the way some A&IP technologies interact with each other to provide an enhanced or original packaging function will become a lot clearer,” he added.

Head of packaging at Marks & Spencer, Kim Philips, will kick proceedings off with a presentation on packaging technology in the retail environment, followed by KPMG senior manager Geert de Vries, who will speak on improving brand protection by using packaging technology.

Bayer's head of packaging and technology innovation, Guido Schmitz, will outline how consumers are driving many packaging technology innovations.

Other companies represented on the speaker podium will include: Thin Film Electronics, a leader in the development of printed electronics; MeadWestvaco, which will outline its work in pioneering extended shelf life; The Scent Marketing Institute, giving a new twist to the power of odours; Smartrac, offering the latest ideas in smart tagging; and UsingNFC, which will demonstrate packaging products for brand protection and marketing.

The federal government has confirmed it will not proceed with the Tax Laws Amendment (Incentivising Food Donations to Charitable Organisations) Bill 2024, saying the legislation contains “deficiencies that compromise its policy intent”, even as food insecurity remains at record levels across Australia.

A lot of food and beverage brands look strong when they’re small. They have one product, one pack, one clear idea and then they grow. That’s usually when things start to unravel, not all at once, but quickly enough to matter. The Creative Method founder and creative director, Tony Ibbotson, explains why – and growth is not the problem.

Victorian-based Aquafab has completed a $620,000 Series A raise through Birchal, supported by over 300 investors. The company told Food & Drink Business that the funds will support continued national growth and plans in place to enter the US and UK markets this year.
