Several food pack designs have scooped accolades in the cartonboard sector through their involvement in the Pro Carton ECMA Awards.
AR Packaging Group's Apetit Ruoka's stock cubes carton (pictured) was one of the finalists in the food category. It can be opened in a single movement using the tear-off strip marked by arrows. The carton is unique in terms of handling, and automated erection and filling are easy.
Boffard Intenso was another finalist, offering an elegant packaging solution for refrigerator displays of products such as cheese. This design offers a striking triangular shape, with a clear, succinct graphic design focus on soft whiteness.
Fazer Alku's Mill and Mixes products from AR Packaging Group offer an advance in terms of sustainability, avoiding the use of inner plastic bags which affect the product’s convenience as well as value appeal. Resealability has also been solved, as the customer can simply press the corner to seal the pack.
Alzamora Packaging worked on the innovative free-range eggs system for García Puente The carton stands out at Point of Sale through its unusual design, while retaining the safety and simplicity of a traditional carton. The pack offers high convenience in use, is easy to hold and carry, and can be placed directly into the refrigerator and stacked easily.
The graphic design of the Knorr Main Course range is appetising, with the cup visible through the window and the ingredients appearing to flow across the edges. A technical advantage is found in an innovative bonding method which allows fast and easy erection and filling via the base flap, making it cost-effective.
In the 'slim and healthy' food category, Spar Vital won acclaim for its crunchy fruit snacks. The carton and its narrow profile with window cut-out on the front communicate a message of 'enjoying a nibble with no regrets'. The requirement for an environment-friendly pack without additional adhesive was achieved with a solution made of cartonboard, and without the original plastic packaging.
The organisers said the best entries were not only sustainable, but excelled through design, convenience and brand communication
Chairman Satkar Gidda said the entries demonstrated that good design need not necessarily be complicated.
“If an outstanding concept is in harmony with the needs of production, distribution, the trade and, above all, the consumer, then we see really powerful solutions,” she said.
The 2015 Awards will be presented on 10 September as part of the festive Award Gala at the ECMA Congress in Bucharest.
