Solutions company Esko has announced a strategy for helping companies adapt their packaging to comply with new nutritional labelling regulations.
Vice president of global marketing at Esko, Philippe Adam, said a wave of new legislation is being introduced as governments globally seek to educate consumers via product packaging.
“For the food and beverage industry, as well as many pharmaceutical and nutraceutical companies, this means keeping on top of the various regulations and adapting their packaging and business processes accordingly,” he said.
Esko has come up with tailored solutions and smart software capabilities to help uncode the regulations.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently said it would introduce an updated Nutrition Facts label for packaged foods, with compliance required by July 2018.
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has since proposed updated nutritional information for meat and poultry products.
Regulators in other countries are taking a similar approach, with new guidelines on communicating nutritional information on packaging announced in Canada and France, with others set to follow.
Untangling the complexity
Esko has come up with three clearly defined solutions for companies.
Solution one starts with the brand owner, solution two starts with the artwork, and solution three is full system integration.
Each organisation can choose a solution which best helps them optimise their nutritional labelling process and create a single source of truth.
The solutions are outlined in Esko’s white paper on regulatory compliance process and technology.
Esko is also releasing a unique feature that pulls nutritional fact data from existing packaging files (AI or PDF files) and converts this to a data stream that can be used on any other piece of artwork to automate artwork creation.
