Folding carton and printing specialist Colorpak is making its mark in the super premium ice cream category with its new paper cup capability. The company established this division of its business in 2011, with the first PE-coated paperboard cups rolling off the line in June last year. The facility, constructed within Colorpak’s Braeside factory, houses leading edge cup and lid forming equipment in a dedicated clean room environment.

David Petrie, new business development manager of the paper cup business, tells PKN the market response has been very positive, with contracts from leading multinational brand owners as well as from contract manufacturers for private label ice cream brands.

“Our customers in the super premium ice cream sector of the market have experienced an improvement in their packaging quality, reduced their lead times, and opened up flexibility in their supply model.

“One of the chief benefits is that in Colorpak they have an end to end supplier. Through our Brandpack division we offer the whole gamut of design services, including full graphic design, pre-press and prototyping, which assists significantly with improving speed to market. And in the competitive FMCG sector, speed to market counts for a lot. That’s how our customers will stay ahead.”

Petrie says following on from the success in the ice cream sector, the company has also had strong interest from confectionery, bakery and snack manufacturers.

“We’re tooled up for ice cream, with cup sizes of 125ml, 475ml and one litre, but we’re working on a number of exciting solutions to suit other categories,” he says.
