Councils around Australia are catching on to the benefits of supplying households with composting bags from Cardia Bioplastics.

Cardia Bioplastics, a subsidiary of SECOS Group Limited (ASX: SES), has secured ongoing contracts to supply 10 Australian councils with kitchen tidy bins and compostable bags for their large-scale organic waste diversion and recycling programs.

Since the start of the programs, the councils have supplied households with more than 19 million compostable bags from Cardia.

Together with the bags, the kitchen tidy bin enables aeration of food waste, encouraging an aerobic environment that minimises unpleasant odours. With the use of a kitchen tidy, households can easily capture kitchen organic scraps, which, when placed in the green waste bins, are recycled in composting facilities to create fertilisers.

Food and garden waste are the main sources of organic waste in landfills, and most households are currently placing organic material such as food scraps and garden waste into their residual waste bin.

By recycling organic material there is the opportunity to reduce carbon emissions and improve soil quality by injecting carbon and other nutrients back into the soil, which also assists in improving the soil's water penetration.
