Amcor reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 13 per cent, in the 2012-2013 financial year, the company’s latest sustainability report reveals.

Released at the company’s annual general meeting, the report is Amcor's eleventh detailing its data on its environmental, social and economic performance.

Performance highlights for 2012-2013 include:

  • A reduction of 13 per cent in its overall greenhouse gas emissions;
  • A waste to landfill reduction of 31 per cent; and
  • Reduction of 12 per cent in water use at its sites in Australia and New Zealand.

Amcor chairman Ken McKenzie attributed the recent progress to the company’s EnviroAction program, instituted two years ago.

“Our global EnviroAction program continues to drive improvement in environmental performance throughout our operations,” he said.

“This program sets short and long-term reduction targets for greenhouse gas emissions intensity, municipal water use intensity and waste to landfill intensity.”

The report was prepared in accordance with the GRI’s Sustainability Reporting Guidelines (2006) and AccountAbility’s AA1000 Assurance Standard (2008).

It was independently assessed by Netbalance, a provider of sustainability advice, assurance, and research in Australia.
