An annual highlight on the food and beverage industry calendar, Fine Food Australia will be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition centre from 12-15 September.

The show will include a dedicated Packaging World exhibition space for suppliers of packaging solutions ranging from pizza boxes to eco-friendly packaging, cups and cup accessories, take-away packaging and other paper and board products.

Over 50,000 products will be on show covering a broad spectrum of offerings, from packaged foods to cafe décor and point of sale systems.

For packaged foods, 'sustainability' and 'eco-friendly' are dominant trends, with biodegradable, reusable and compostable packaging making a strong showing. Luxury packaging with creative branding and design, and a focus on displaying product provenance is also expected to feature strongly.

Here are just a few packaging ideas to look out for:

SNACK PACKS

Convenience is king for both trade and consumer. Yumi’s Quality Foods has developed a range of tasty and convenient Dip & Lavosh Snack Packs, which are suitable for a wide variety of uses including within educational facilities, airlines, caterers and convenience outlets. Yumi's has also produced a range of dips in a squeeze pouch – the company is touting that this product 'turns dip upside-down'.

Cantina Mexicana will also be presented a full range of Tex Mex products including chip and dip kits, and also dinner kits, that can be served as a complete offering or retailed.

COMBINATION CONCEPTS

Colpac's 'Combione' one part packaging is a cutting edge new concept in combination packaging. The result of intensive research and testing, the paperboard base and plastic lid are fused together and allows for efficient labelling, a firmly shutting lid, and is anti-mist. Colpac will also be highlighting concepts, including heat-seal packaging, that can extend shelf life of fresh salads / wraps to four days.

HEAT BAGS

First Pack Group has a range of revolutionary products designed to help businesses capitalise on the ever increasing demand for home delivery. The range includes battery powered Heat Bags for hot food transport, and Heat Pads to assist in maintaining heating and freshness en route.

COOKIE CUPS

Not quite packaging, but sort of... Priestley's Gourmet Delights has turned the notion of packaged desserts on its head with the introduction of Cookie Cups. Negating the need for food presentation packaging, the cookie cup has been formed to create the perfect base and housing case for a variety of flavoured mousses, creams, and caramels.Fine Food 1

Food & Drink Business

Fonterra has announced Anna Palairet is the new chief operating officer, having acted in the role since June 2023. CEO Miles Hurrell says Palairet has “extensive experience in operational, customer, sustainability, and sales roles”.

Food & Drink Business editor Kim Berry's take on the big news stories this week, and what caught her eye overseas. How will the Future Made in Australia Act actually be delivered? Shanghai trials traffic light labelling, and Solar Food, making protein out of (virtually) nothing at all, opens its commercial scale facility (that's it in the pic).

Food Frontier’s industry leading annual alternative proteins conference, AltProteins 24, is on in Melbourne on 10 October, with early bird tickets now available.
