The latest print issue of Machinery Matters, the Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association's  regular supplement published in partnership with PKN Packaging News and Food & Drink Business, has now hit desks, and is also available online in digital format.

In the final issue for 2022, we bring you the latest news, trends and technology relevant to the Australasian packaging and processing machinery sector.

In the Chairman’s Message, Mark Dingley looks back at the year that was, with optimism growing with the hardships of the pandemic largely behind us and business progressively returning to normal for the most part. He muses on the return of global exhibitions, as well as the success of the Association’s own AUSPACK. He also looks forward to the future, unpacking the transition of AUSPACK to APPEX in 2024, as well all the upcoming major international industry shows.

In the APPMA News section, we announce the successful re-election of three APPMA Board directors : Matthews' Mark Dingley, ABB’s Peter Bradbury and Inox’s Robert Becher will all serve another term; and we look at one of APPMA’s key business strategies, to develop relationships with other associations, government, and business service providers, and how this will improve member services, while also promoting the broader processing and packaging industry.

Member News this edition includes Nupac Industries’ new solution for handling and portioning cookies and crackers; Kuka Robotics’ cobot delivering 24/7 production; Result Group bringing ‘natural branding’ to the Australian fresh produce market with EcoMark; KHS developing a PET bottle with glued-in handle; SMC upgrading its range of bar and nozzle type ionizers; Selpak relocating Melbourne headquarters; Proseal strengthening Australian operations with new Melbourne factory; Matthews Australasia now offering free supply-chain solutions tools; Multivac expanding its Queensland sales and logistics facility; and HMPS purchasing the IP of Andrew Donald Design Engineering (ADDE)

In Trends & Tech, we report on Pack Expo, which, after a four-year hiatus, returned bigger and better than ever, with over 44,000 visitors getting the chance to see more then 2000 exhibits; we check in with Omni Group, which is on a mission to reduce plastic usage, with a focus on optimised pallet wrapping solutions and the supply of a full range of eco-focused packaging materials; and also learn more from Foodmach about why US-based Consumer Packaged Goods manufacturers are demanding more OEMs deliver predictive maintenance solutions.

And for our Case Study, we visit Mountain Culture Brewery, one of the fastest growing craft breweries in Australia, which has installed a Krones Craftmate C canning line at its new brewpub and brewery in Emu Plains.

Enjoy the read, and a reminder to all APPMA members to submit your product and company news to editor@packagingnews.com.au or contact publisher Lindy Hughson on lindyhughson@yaffa.com.au to discuss your editorial ideas.

Machinery Matters is published bi-monthly in partnership with APPMA as a supplement to PKN Packaging News and Food & Drink Business.

Food & Drink Business

As consumers increasingly focus on better-for-you food and drink choices, opportunities grow for manufacturers to add functional ingredients to existing or new products to meet the demand. Kim Berry reports.

Pure Foods Tasmania (PFT) says its 3Q24 results should be viewed “through the prism of major restructuring” that was focused on “tight capital management, cost reduction, and product rationalisation”. PFT has also announced a capital raise.

Three years after resigning as managing director of Lion Australia, James Brindley is back in the role as the company announces a series of structural and people changes.
