Atlas Copco vacuum pumps are enabling faster cycle times and higher productivity for an Italian food packaging machine manufacturer.

The company, which designs and builds automatic vacuum packaging systems for small to large production volumes, identified the need for higher vacuum speed and improved cycle times in its large chamber machines.

Atlas Copco supplied its GHS 1402 VSD+ oil-injected screw vacuum pump. The pump, equipped with a permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motor and oil-cooled bearings, maintains temperature stability under demanding conditions. A Variable Speed Drive (VSD) automatically adjusts vacuum power to match process demand, reducing energy use.

The pumps are controlled via Atlas Copco’s HEX@TM controller, which allows users to monitor operating status, vacuum levels and scheduled events remotely. The addition of the GHS VSD+ enabled the packaging machines to achieve up to two cycles per minute.

“Not only were they able to achieve better packaging speeds and cycle times, but they could also explore a new level of vacuum efficiency with our pump’s Industry 4.0 capabilities,” Atlas Copco said.

The company said the upgrade will help optimise energy consumption, increase packaging capacity and simplify pump control.
