GlaxoSmithKline is among leading brandowners waking up to the opportunity active and intelligent packaging presents for consumer engagement. It's using the upcoming AIPIA congress to see where it can lead.

GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals businesses are teaming together to host the 2018 AIPIA World Congress Challenge; they are inviting participants to present innovative ideas, that incorporate active and intelligent packaging formats and technologies and can be applied across their portfolio of consumer and pharmaceutical brands.

The Consumer Healthcare business develops and markets global brands in oral and skin health, respiratory, pain relief, and nutrition/gastro-intestinal categories and is one of the world’s leading over-the-counter healthcare companies.

GSK recognises that with rapid developments in today’s digital era, packaging has a unique opportunity to play a significant role in enabling and facilitating connected platforms and providing the consumer with increased engagement with products.

It looks to intergrate active and intelligent packaging to enhance the consumer experience with its over-the-counter products.

Sriman Banerjee, GSK Respiratory R&D packaging director, said he is “excited to take this innovative stride in the journey to benefit our consumers with modern day connected packaging solutions to do more, feel better and live longer.”

The Pharmaceuticals business says that since several of its medicines are intended to treat life threatening conditions, it is critical that they are administered and/or taken accurately and consistently per the prescribed dosing regimen. So GSK is seeking active and intelligent packaging technologies that can facilitate authenticity of the medication and tamper evidence; comprehension of and easy access to use instructions; live tracking of dosing accuracy and compliance; live monitoring of health condition; personalization; telemedicine; and sustainability.

Executive director of AIPIA, Eef de Ferrante, said, “This is a landmark Challenge for the Congress to take it purely into healthcare for the first time. It shows clearly that major innovators such as GSK are ready to embrace Active & Intelligent Packaging and engage with its developers in a highly dynamic way on a number of levels.”

Among the 40 other speakers, Oliver Bolton, founder of Almond.io will tell how he developed a Blockchain enabled canned water product along with software platform provider EVRYTHNG; Daniel Nicholson head of IT at Tangle Teezer explains how his company is using its product security platform as a production planning tool and inventory optimiser; and, after 20 years working for CPG companies, Christina Cvetan, a founding partner at Ahead of the Curve Group, will show how to drive performance in a connected world through design, process, network and technical know-how.

AIP World Congress & Exhibition is a 2-day event being held from 19th November to 20th November 2018 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This event will bring together all the elements of Printed Electronics, Anti-Microbial, Nanotechnologies, Additives, Virtual & Augmented Reality and the Internet of Things (IoT).
