The World Packaging Organisation (WPO) has announced the 214 winners of its global packaging competition, the WorldStar Packaging Awards 2024, with Australia and New Zealand coming up third overall in countries by winners.

This year’s top five is made up of Japan (28 winners), Germany (21), Australia and New Zealand (16), USA (12), and Brazil and Austria at equal fifth (11 each).

Luciana Pellegrino, president of WPO, said, “It is always with pride and excitement that WPO announces the best of the best packaging innovation around the globe.

“The WorldStar Awards showcase how dynamic and technological the packaging is on a global level,” she said.

“The increasing number of entries every year and the global reach of WorldStar prove that our industry keeps investing in efficiency and new solutions to better serve society.

“This global award raises the voice for packaging and brings light to innovation, aligned to the main supply and consumption chains trends, and modern life needs and challenges – save food, sustainability, branding and user experience, food safety, smart packaging, among other aspects.

“WorldStar brings with it the effort of WPO’s members in 63 different countries on promoting local and regional awards to foster innovation on a local level, and to recognise professionals, packaging converters and brands that make it happen.”

The awards ceremony will take place in Thailand on 15 June during ProPak Asia. At the same occasion, WPO will announce the winners for the special categories – President’s Award, Sustainability, Marketing, and Packaging that Saves Food.

Packages eligible for WorldStar Awards are those that have already received a national or regional packaging award from a packaging competition that is recognised by WPO during the last two years.

“WorldStar echoes the importance of packaging innovation on a global level, fostering science, technology and innovation, recognising and encouraging packaging professionals to go beyond,” said Soha Atallah, vice-president of event at WPO and WorldStar coordinator.

“As always, our aim is to promote packaging innovation in various sectors, proving that a good package can be an essential solution to many of the modern problems, especially sustainability, food waste and extending shelf life of food and agricultural products.

“That’s why we encourage all the companies from around the world to benefit from this global opportunity to promote their packaging by competing with the best of the best packaging innovation on a global scale.”

Oat Milk Goodness (OMG) Group’s Barista Oat Milk will now be available in over 350 additional Woolworths supermarkets from November, with the brand receiving a notice of distribution increase for its popular oat milk.

The impact of Woolworths reducing Ingham’s supply contract became clear on Friday, when the country’s largest chicken processor presented its FY25 results and reported a 10.2 per cent drop in net profits to $89.8 million. Revenue was $3.1 billion, a drop of 1.5 per cent.

Bega Group reported $3.5 billion in revenue for FY25, with $165 million in earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA). But restructuring costs from “transformational business improvement initiatives” impacted the business.
