Are you heading to AUSPACK 2019? We've got the scoop on what to expect at the biggest AUSPACK ever, courtesy of Matthews Australasia.

Coming to Melbourne on 26-29 March, AUSPACK brings together more than 350 suppliers representing a massive 1,200 global brands – all under one roof. Organisers are promising this will be the “most comprehensive and occupying the largest floor space in its history”.

And that’s not all - it’s also the stage for the AUSPACK Business and Industry Conference. More than 40 speakers are lined up to reveal new data and ideas on the themes of packaging and processing and business growth.

Whether this is your first time at AUSPACK or you’re a seasoned visitor, it pays to plan your visit to get the best out of the four days.

Here’s our pick of the top 10 things to see and do:

1. Be inspired at the Awards of Excellence
The Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association (APPMA) Awards of Excellence are once again part of 2019 Packaging and Processing Week. This year, they have a unique sustainability twist. Walk along the bubble-wrap “red-carpet” entrance, take your seat at the Gala Awards Ceremony on 27 March and be inspired by the best in the industry. (This is open to all APPMA members and exhibitors; there are still a few tickets left, so make sure you sign up quickly!)

2. Unveil the ‘factory of the future’
Head over to the AUSPACK Business and Industry Conference 2019 to hear smart factories mentor John Broadbent demystify the rapidly changing technical environment of smart factories, Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT). This promises to be an insightful talk as he delves into evidence manufacturers who have seen big rewards, including an increased supply chain visibility and higher customer satisfaction. (Before you go, read up on a manufacturer’s practical guide to the technologies driving Industry 4.0, what you need to know about Industry 4.0, lean manufacturing + Industry 4.0 as the next level of operational excellence and empowering people as a key to Industry 4.0 strategy.)

3. See IIOT connectivity

4. Hear about blockchain and IoT technologies in action
John Baird will present a case study on 'How Blockchain and IoT Provide Full Traceability of the Supply Chain'. Baird uncovers how the combination of blockchain and IoT technologies provides full supply chain traceability, ensuring authenticity and safety.

5. Take your line to new heights.
AUSPACK is promising to showcase outstanding packaging and processing machinery that will set benchmarks for speed, flexibility and fast changeover capability. And if previous years are anything to go by, it won’t disappoint! You’re sure to be inspired by an array of solutions designed to optimise production efficiency and increase overall equipment effectiveness.

6. Focus on food security and safety
If you’re looking for ways to battle counterfeiters and improve food security and safety, AUSPACK has it covered. Investigate the latest coding and intelligent marking products and systems designed specifically to improve track and trace. Think 2D coding, serialisation and other unique identification tagging options.

7. Witness the future of smart packaging
Active & Intelligent Packaging is emerging as a powerful interface between brand and consumer. But how does it work in action? You can see for yourself at AUSPACK 2019. Witness how smart-device enabled visual recognition technology can be linked to augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications for experience-rich marketing campaigns via packaging.

8. Hit your sustainability goals
Sustainable packaging is fast becoming the industry standard, and no manufacturer can afford to ignore it. AUSPACK will give you an opportunity to explore a broad range of solutions designed to help manufacturers meet sustainability goals, whether that’s reducing energy usage or using recyclable and biodegradable packaging.

9. Join the discussion
Join a panel discussion and Q&A opportunity on various topics. Find out how Industry 4.0 works in practice, what technologies you should embrace to compete locally and globally, and how to get started. Discover how the rise of the mindful consumer is driving change in packaging and processing. And see how e-commerce is shaking up the supply chain.

10. Breakfast with business leaders
The best ideas happen over coffee. Food & Drink Business

Fonterra has announced Anna Palairet is the new chief operating officer, having acted in the role since June 2023. CEO Miles Hurrell says Palairet has “extensive experience in operational, customer, sustainability, and sales roles”.

Food & Drink Business editor Kim Berry's take on the big news stories this week, and what caught her eye overseas. How will the Future Made in Australia Act actually be delivered? Shanghai trials traffic light labelling, and Solar Food, making protein out of (virtually) nothing at all, opens its commercial scale facility (that's it in the pic).

Food Frontier’s industry leading annual alternative proteins conference, AltProteins 24, is on in Melbourne on 10 October, with early bird tickets now available.
