As demand for an ever-greater variety of packaged goods increases, with multiple SKUs often being produced on single production lines, the packaging and processing machinery sector is advancing apace in order to equip manufacturing plants with technology that meets rapidly changing end-user and retailer demands.

At AUSPACK 2019, outstanding packaging and processing machinery will set benchmarks for agility with fast changeover capability designed to optimise production efficiency and increase overall equipment effectiveness. Modular frame designs from HMPS (stand G140), for example, provide ‘future-proof’ scalable solutions to customers with capacity for retrofitting.

Modular design is also on show at Jet Technologies (stand D100), with the Ilpra Fill Seal R12/4 Tronic rotary filler and sealer. This high-productivity machine precisely fills denestable cups in up to 12 stations at a maximum speed of 9000, and can be customised to meet the needs of each individual end user.

Automation is another good way to implement efficient and flexible production. Robotic palletisers from Fibre King (stand A140) are already in use at companies such as Australian Garlic Bread Co, capable of multitasking and the ability to handle a number of different product types.

With multiple SKUs comes the need for flexible packaging print, and Limitronic in-line digital printers from Orora (stand C080) allow variable data to be printed directly to the pack without the need for labels. This not only expands branding and customisation capabilities, it eliminates the need to keep pre-printed cartons on site, freeing up valuable storage space.

Fast and flexible food processing solutions are in high demand as well, and Summit Machinery (stand F060) will show off industrial food cutting equipment from FAM. The Dorphy tridimensional slicer and the Centris 315 centrifugal slicer and shredder, designed for fruit and vegetables, are speedy and efficient machines that can be used stand-alone or slotted into a processing line.

Product safety is a major concern for food packagers and processors, and Eriez Magnetics (stand H130) has joined its ProGrade magnets with Xtreme metal detectors to screen out both ferrous and non-ferrous metal contaminants, offering maximum flexibility in the quality assurance process.

In the beverage space, Sidel Group and Gebo Cermex (stand E238) offers a range of solutions for both cans and bottles, including the EvoFILL Can filler and BoostPRIME PET packaging solution. These have been deployed in locations around the world, boosting productivity and allowing manufacturers to reduce material costs, labour costs and turnaround times.

Last but not least, Schur Star Systems Australia (stand H166) offers flexible equipment for flexible packaging. The Schur Star concept combines the Schur Star packaging machine with customisable premade bags linked together on a string, ensuring a smooth process.
