The Australasian Institute of Packaging (AIP) will hold a State of Industry Webinar on the ‘Global Plastics Pollution Treaty INC5.2 and what’s next’ on Wednesday 19 November.

Speakers from Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, USA and Indonesia will share insights on the global plastics treaty at the AIP webinar.

The session will cover the UN treaty on plastic pollution, which aims to address the full lifecycle of plastics, including design, production, consumption and disposal. Global plastic waste is expected to reach 1.7 billion metric tonnes by 2060. INC5.2 negotiations in Geneva in August, part of a series of UN talks involving more than 175 countries, did not reach a resolution. The treaty’s development has highlighted that global targets need to be matched with tailored in-country action plans.

The webinar will feature an international panel of five experts who attended INC5.2:

  • Rajat Rai Handa, specialist Plastic Value Chains and Policy, Global Plastic Action Partnership, World Economic Forum (Switzerland)
  • Shaun Lewis, general manager Waste Systems & Operations, Ministry for Environment (New Zealand)
  • Conor Carlin, past president, SPE: Society of Plastics Engineers (USA)
  • Rocky Pairunan, manager for Ocean & Plastic Waste Program and lead of MPAPA ID Secretariat, World Resources Institute (Indonesia)
  • Shannon Doherty-Andall MAIP, sustainability manager, Australian Beverages Council (Australia)

During the panel discussion, attendees will have the opportunity to review outcomes from all five treaty negotiation rounds, explore the path forward, and discuss what countries can do with or without a global treaty.

The webinar is open to all industry participants, who are encouraged to share the registration link with their networks. Attendees will also receive points towards the Certified Packaging Professional designation.
