Drone delivery company Wing will begin the next phase of development in its business, as it plans to deploy a new operating model called the ‘Wing Delivery Network’ next year.

Following a partnership with Coles in the Gold Coast and Canberra last year to deliver groceries to customers’ doorsteps, for its next phase, Wing says its drones will now be able to pick up, drop off, travel and recharge in whatever pattern makes the most sense for the entire system. The company explains that this fundamental change means that the drones will be able to continue deliveries throughout the entire day, without ever returning to the original point of origin.

Expanding operations: Wing to enter next phase of development

Wing will also introduce a new piece of hardware known as the Autoloader. Participating retailers will be able to set up an Autoloader outside their location, and when an order comes in an employer just has to load the package into the Autoloader and then can walk away. The company explains that the automated network will then select a drone to retrieve the package and deliver it to the customer, which will free employees from needing to await the drone’s arrival.
