Pernod Ricard Winemakers has won the Packaging & Design Award at the 2024 Wine Industry Suppliers Association (WISA) Impact Awards, for its lightweight Riesling bottle. Developed in collaboration with Visy Glass, the bottle is 108 grams lighter and 11mm shorter than standard industry bottles.

The bottle's reduced weight makes it more space-efficient and requires less energy to produce, lowering the environmental impact. According to Marissa Altmeier, sustainability leader at Pernod Ricard Winemakers, "The bottle uses 20.8 grams less energy to produce, helping to reduce raw material use and energy consumption."

This design, which is now available for use by other wine companies, enables wineries to enter new markets like the Nordics, Canada, and the UK, where lighter bottles are required. Altmeier also highlighted the bottle's compliance with the 'lightweight bottle accord' established by the Sustainable Wine Round Table.

"This collaboration between Pernod Ricard Winemakers and Visy Glass shows how innovation can lead to industry-wide solutions," Altmeier added.

Earlier this year, Altmeier was recognised for her work on sustainability with the Sustainability Leader Award at the Women in Packaging Awards hosted by PKN Packaging News.

"The award-winning bottle is a step forward in Pernod Ricard's sustainability initiatives, combining functionality with eco-friendly design," Altmeier said.
