Winesmiths has released a vibrant set of limited-edition 2-litre wine packs designed by Australian street artist Mulga, well known for his funky animal creations. The packaging is printed by Detpak.

The partnership with Mulga will not only provide a canvas for his interpretive style but aims to bring excitement to the cask wine category.

The new packs are printed onto recyclable kraft board by Detpak and exhibit Mulga’s interpretive art style, which the company says will “bring excitement to cask wine shelves in liquor stores”.

Winesmiths is currently working to develop a recyclable bladder, but as yet this is still a work in progress.

The company is also working on a new tap fixture for its casks, which is currently in development, due for release in October. The fixture will be packed inside the cask, and once opened, can be placed on the nozzle.

“Just like an artist, our winemakers put as much love and dedication into each of our cask wines as they do bottled wines,” said Jacinta Gibson, marketing manager at Yalumba, producer of Winesmiths. “They don’t compromise on quality in any way. It’s about harnessing the greatness of the variety for that vintage.”

Gibson says that the new packs will not only gain appeal due to their visual attractivenes but also because of the of the quality of the wine itself and the convenience that the 2-litre pack offers.

The designs appear on the Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Shiraz packs, each featuring Australian characters such as the cockatoo, parrot, ibis, platypus and seagull.

Mulga’s funky animal creations are set within a summer infused world of bright colours, along with settings of ‘joyful times’ that help the ‘pack pop’ on the shelves.

“I love summer times and creating funky characters who exhibit that larrikin Australian sensibility, and if my art brings a smile to your dial, I’m happy,” said Mulga, who is the first artist in, what will be, a series of artist collaborations for the brand as part of its ‘Winesmiths Sacrifice Nothing Grant’ of $5,000.

Every sale of the Winesmiths Mulga Edition casks will contribute to the grant. Interested artists can register via the Winesmiths website before 30 September 2021.

The limited-edition designed packs are in liquor stores for the rest of the month.

Food & Drink Business

Food & Drink Business editor Kim Berry's take on the big news stories this week, and what caught her eye overseas. How will the Future Made in Australia Act actually be delivered? Shanghai trials traffic light labelling, and Solar Food, making protein out of (virtually) nothing at all, opens its commercial scale facility (that's it in the pic).

Food Frontier’s industry leading annual alternative proteins conference, AltProteins 24, is on in Melbourne on 10 October, with early bird tickets now available.
