In time for this year’s World Gin Day (13 June), South Australian craft spirit brand Twenty Third Street Distillery has launched its Bushfire Recovery Signature Gin, featuring augmented reality (AR) on its scannable label.

The Bushfire Recovery Signature Gin was created to support SAVEM’s (South Australian Veterinary Emergency Management) work on Kangaroo Island following the recent bushfire season.

Twenty Third Street Distillery worked with Kangaroo Island assemblage artist Janine Mackintosh for the label design of the limited-edition gin, while the AR feature – developed by South Australia-based LabelMotionAR – takes consumers to the island when using the LabelMotionAR app.

“To highlight the severity of the bush fires and the critical role SAVEM plays in the rehabilitation of Kangaroo Island our new release features an augmented reality video,” said Renee Bezzina, group venues manager Bickford’s Group, parent company of Twenty Third Street Distillery.

“It was devastating to see firsthand the effects on the island and the habitat and wildlife, so we wanted to show our support to the region through releasing the Bush Fire Recovery Signature Gin.”

The label design comprises of KI narrow-leaved eucalyptus leaves, while “the little dots are the flower caps (or operculum),” said Mackintosh.

“Sometimes I see the patterns of my assemblages as aerial landscapes, with the spaces like wallaby tracks, and the flower caps could be seen as the animals darting through the bush,” she said.

The gin was initially planned for release earlier in the year, but due to Covid-19 lockdown measures, the distillery had to put the launch on hold.

Twenty Third Street Distillery’s Bushfire Recovery Signature Gin is available for pre-order and for purchase from 13 June from Twenty Third Street Distillery in Renmark.

One hundred per cent of sales will be donated to aid in wildlife recovery and long-term rehabilitation.
