An artisan biscuit maker chose a Perth design agency to add sophistication to its packaging.

The Margaret River-based food company, Claudio Biscotti, chose Creative agency Dessein to create a new look for its cardboard biscuit boxes, with the aim of also employing offset and foil stamping at the printing stage.

The Italian manufacturer has over 400 different recipes for its biscuits, which are hand-made in small batches.

Company owner Claudio Tallarico wanted his biscuits to be presented in packaging which embodies the same values of love and care imparted by the handmade process.

Presenting them as both a gourmet treat and artisan gift was imperative, according to Dessein.

A two-part box provides the solution.

Firstly, rose gold foil embellishes and elevates the range. A rose gold foiled seal sits atop the first, upper box with a cookie-cut shape die on the front face. This generic box is shorter and sits over the larger, second base box for each specific biscuit.

The printing was done by Percival Print & Packaging, while Intafoil was responsible for the rose gold foil stamping. The stock variety was Carta Solid from Spicers.

Simple photography heroing the product peeps through the front cookie-cut die of the top box, while the ingredients, a personal message from Claudio, and separate product description also appear through separate die-cut windows around the sides.

The experience of gifting is emphasised as the top box is lifted, and reveals the coloured base box featuring cameos of the key ingredients, highlighting the distinct flavours and story behind the biscuit name, history, and best way to enjoy them.

The packaging is colourful, distinctive and contemporary without compromising the integrity of the products' traditional values.

It elevates the user experience of unboxing before experiencing the joys of the biscuits themselves, according to the company.
