German press giant KBA has bought Turkish folder gluer equipment manufacturing company Duran, and changed its name to reflect the deal - the company is now known as Koenig & Bauer Duran.

The deal comes two years after Koenig & Bauer bought Spanish die cutting manufacturer Iberica, and means the company can now offer complete folding carton printing and production lines for box making, including the KBA Rapida presses, the Iberica and now the Duran folder gluers on the end.

Local KBA managing director Dave Lewis, who is in Germany at the moment, tells PKN, "We will be supplying Duran equipment in ANZ."

Koenig & Bauer expects the acquisition and integration of Duran to boost its market share in folding carton gluers, strengthen packaging production activities, and boost sales. The acquisition and integration of Duran is in line with the global Koenig & Bauer Group‘s strategy of focusing on growth markets, with packaging firmly in its sights.

The deal leaves independent folder gluer equipment manufacturers with a reduced market opportunity: rival Heidelberg also has its own folder gluer line, and manroland is now the only German packaging press manufacturer without its own folder gluer.

Although not well known in Australia or New Zealand, Istanbul based Duran has 30 years of experience in designing and manufacturing folder gluers in various formats and configurations. Thanks to market share gains, today Duran has established itself as one of the leading manufacturers in its field. Duran machines are used worldwide by manufacturers of cardboard and corrugated board packaging in 65 countries.

Along with six standard series of Omega folder gluers with different specifications and ancillary equipment, the company also provides R&D services to meet specific production requirements, starting from packaging designs and the manufacturing of innovative tailor-made machinery.

Koenig & Bauer Duran will keep activities in Duran Machinery’s existing premises in Istanbul, and with Duran’s management fully on board.

Ralf Sammeck, CEO of Koenig & Bauer Sheetfed and member of the Koenig & Bauer management board says, "Over the past few years Duran has set new standards and successfully strengthened its position among our customers in the industrial packaging sector. We are now further expanding our worldwide presence as the printing press and die cutter manufacturer with the broadest product portfolio."
