New Zealand company Oceania Dairy Limited has embraced automation in a big way, thanks to an innovative system developed by RML. Previously, its employees had to manually pack 1kg foil pouches of milk powder into shipping cases and stack them onto pallets—a time-consuming and labour-intensive process. But now, technology is doing the heavy lifting.

The new automated setup includes a customised Automated Intermittent RSC Top Load Case Packer, which handles the pouches with precision. Each pouch is tracked with a unique QR code that’s scanned during the process, while vital details like weight, batch ID, and production date are labelled on every case.

Once packed, the cases are whisked away to an ABB Industrial Robot, which arranges them neatly on pallets in pre-set patterns. The system even handles empty pallets, feeding them in stacks of ten, and uses a slip-sheet to protect completed pallets. It's all designed to streamline operations and minimise the need for manual intervention.

Traceability has also been enhanced. The system’s track-and-trace capabilities ensure that every pouch can be traced from the filling room to the final pallet. This data is integrated with Oceania Dairy’s Industrial Control System, ensuring quality control every step of the way.
