Applications for the 2022 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design Awards (PIDA) are now open to Australian and New Zealand companies and individuals making a difference in their field, with entries closing on 8 April 2022.

The PIDA Awards, presented by the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), aim to recognise companies and individuals across a range of sectors, including food and beverage, health and beauty, domestic and household, and more.

The PIDA Awards are also the exclusive award program for all Australia and New Zealand entries into the WorldStar Packaging Awards, which are coordinated by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO).

Last year Australian & New Zealand packaging companies received the second highest number of WorldStar Packaging Awards behind Germany, with Wellman Packaging, Planet Protector Packaging, Zipform Packaging, OF Packaging, Omni Group, Sealed Air and CHEP Australia all winning multiple awards.

2022 PIDA Categories

Within the PIDA Awards there are 14 categories which are made up of general award categories, special awards and individual awards.

The Design Innovation of the Year company awards will recognise organisations that have designed innovative packaging within each of these six manufacturing categories:

  • Food
  • Beverage
  • Health, Beauty & Wellness
  • Domestic & Household
  • Labelling & Decoration
  • Outside of the Box

The four PIDA special awards are as follows:

  • Sustainable Packaging Design
  • Save Food Packaging Design
  • Accessible & Inclusive Packaging Design
  • Marketing

In addition there are four awards designed for people who have made specific contributions to the packaging industry.
The four Individual People Awards include:

  • Young Packaging Professional of the Year
  • Industry Packaging Professional of the Year
  • ABA Scholarship – Certificate in Packaging
  • ABA Scholarship – Diploma in Packaging Technology

Western Australian marine science solutions company, SeaStock, has secured a $740,000 matched co-investment with Australia’s Food and Beverage Accelerator (FaBA) to develop functional ingredients from seaweed.

Mudgee-based winemaker, Lowe Family Wine Co., has installed a landmark $850,000 solar and battery system, developed by SPS Solar + Water. With this project, the company has become one of the first wineries in Australia to operate entirely off-grid.

The financial plight of Maggie Beer Holdings (MBH) – it recorded a loss of $24.3 million in FY25 and $28.2 million in FY24 – has been thrown a lifeline by two of Australia’s leading food manufacturers.
