The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), in collaboration with the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), will introduce a condensed version of the updated ‘Introduction to the Australasian Recycling Labelling (ARL) Program’ training course at the Australian Waste and Recycling Expo (AWRE) on 25 July.

The event is open to all industry professionals, and attendees will earn Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points towards the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation.

With rapid advancements in the packaging industry, the Australasian Recycling Labelling (ARL) Program has also evolved to better serve Australia and New Zealand. According to the AIP, widespread adoption of the ARL on packaging could significantly enhance the recovery of recyclable materials and reduce waste stream contamination.

The ARL program equips packaging technologists, designers, and marketers with essential tools for responsible packaging design. It is an evidence-based initiative that provides consumers with straightforward instructions on how to properly dispose of packaging.

The program mirrors the recycling ecosystems of both countries, covering collection systems, technical recyclability, and available end markets for materials. The ARL logos indicate the appropriate disposal bins for each packaging component, considering regional, state, or national guidelines. They categorise items as recyclable, conditionally recyclable, or non-recyclable, aligning with the program’s assessments.

The updated training course for the ARL program, now inclusive of both Australia and New Zealand, will address:

  • Usage guides for ARL logos
  • Updates on soft plastics thresholds
  • The new Check Locally program
  • Intersections between ARL and Away from Home collection programs
  • ARL's integration with Container Deposit Schemes
  • ARL & the RecycleMate app
  • ARL & QR codes
  • ARL consumer insights
  • The ARL Marketplace for SMEs
  • Best practice award-winning examples
  • An interactive session where attendees can use their own packaging

All AIP training courses are internationally recognised and approved for earning CPP points.

Spaces for the training session are limited. Interested participants are encouraged to book their place through the AIP website: AIP ARL Training Course Registration.
