PKN talks... The future of circular plastics in packaging, with Professor Edward Kosior, CEO and founder of Nextek, and the innovator behind NEXTLOOPP.

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor and publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Ed about the NEXTLOOPP project, which aims to provide companies with recycled food-grade polypropylene plastics for their packaging.

Ed gives us an overview of the project and a detailed review into the regulations, process, and continued development of recycled plastic packaging. We discuss the nuances of different plastics, how businesses can implement recycled plastic packaging, and the common pitfalls faced when recycling.

In an exciting development for the company, at the time of recording the podcast, its innovative COtooCLEAN process was a finalist in the Alliance to End Plastic Waste prize of US$3m for circular solutions for flexible plastics. Ed tells us all about this multi-partner project, which aims to deliver a revolutionary commercial process that can efficiently and effectively clean and decontaminate post-consumer polyolefin films to a food-grade status by using a unique Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (ScCO2) cleaning process.

[Publisher's note: Today (30 November) we have news that Nextek has won the prize. In this podcast, Ed shares what Nextek will spend the money on to advance the technology to the next stage closer to commercial upscaling.)

We also get an insight into the future of circular plastics in packaging, how Australia can further develop its recycling infrastructure, and how we can overcome roadblocks that are impeding the widespread adoption of circular plastic packaging.

Food & Drink Business

Australia’s native food industry has received a boost – with Indigenous-owned Cooee Foods Australia acquiring native ingredients suppliers, Creative Native Foods – placing it under First Nations ownership for the first time in its 25 years.

The Top 10 remained a stable list this year, with five companies holding their position – Fonterra (#1), JBS (#2), Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (#3), Asahi (#4), and Thomas Foods International (#7). The biggest change was Treasury Wine Estates dropping out of the list, from #10 to #13.

Food & Drink Business and IBISWorld present this year’s Top 100 companies, a ranking of Australia’s largest food and drink companies by revenue. This year reflects a sector positioning itself for immediate term viability and long-term competitiveness.
