Husky Technologies has won the Packaging Europe Sustainability Award in the Driving Circular Economy category for its PET closure, recognised for advancing circularity in beverage packaging. The award was presented at the Sustainable Packaging Summit in Amsterdam.

The PET closure is a fully PET-based mono-material solution, which is compatible with existing PET recycling streams. Husky says this innovation reduces environmental impact by streamlining material sorting and improves recycling efficiency.

Robert Domodossola, president of Systems and Tooling at Husky, said “At Husky, our commitment to enabling the packaging industry to transition from a linear to a circular economy is taken seriously. Winning the Packaging Europe Sustainability Award for our PET closure reflects this commitment to delivering innovative, sustainable solutions that meet global demands for more circular packaging.”

According to Husky, the PET closure aims to enhance both operational and environmental performance by:

  • Enhanced Circularity: Aligning the closure and bottle materials eliminates the need for multi-material sorting, resulting in higher yields of recyclable PET.
  • Improved Efficiency: The closure’s rigid properties allow for reductions in material use and weight, minimising costs and waste.
  • Reliable Performance: A patented tamper-evident forming approach ensures consumer safety and reduces reject rates.

First unveiled at NPE 2024 in Orlando, Florida, the PET closure has already received support from early adopters who plan to begin commercial production in 2025.
