Packaging and label printer Pemara announced to the market in September last year that it had made the ground-breaking move to invest in cutting edge technology for printing folding cartons – the HP Indigo 30000 digital sheetfed press. At the same time the company announced a sizeable upgrade to its printing facility in Notting Hill, Melbourne.

General manager, Damien Prunty, told PKN, “An investment of this scale warranted an upgrade of our facilities into what will be one of the finest printing environments in the world.”

Six months later the state-of-the-art-facility is up and running, and sporting HACCP and FSC 22000 certification, as well as ISO 14001 accreditation. Not surprisingly, well over 100 customers, suppliers and local dignitaries accepted the invitation to tour the impressive new premises and see the flagship HP Indigo 30000 in situ.

The HP 30000 is not Pemara's first foray into the digital space, the company was an early adopter of the technology with the HP Indigo WS 6600 for labels and carton printing, and this sits alongside the new flagship in the facility, along with the full spectrum of printing machinery that was housed in Pemara's plant before.

But as the first machine of its kind in the Asia Pacific region, the HP 30000 certainly drew a lot of interest at the opening, with Mark Daws, GM Labels and Packaging at Currie Group (HP Indigo's distribution partner in the region) demonstrating the key features of the printer.

Positioned by HP as “the breakthrough offset-matching solution the carton folding industry has been seeking for years”, the HP 30000's capabilities include being able to print on any substrate from 200-600 microns in thickness, print up to 4600 full colour sheets per hour, and run multiple jobs per shift.  It facilitates cost-effective printing of short runs, reduces waste and artwork preparation costs, enables product customisation and serialisation and allows for increased flexibility and speed to market through fast turnaround.

In the competitive FMCG and pharmaceuitical markets that need to drive innovation hard and fast, the ability to be nimble and creative with packaging will give brand owners a definite edge, and Pemara knows that.
