Amcor Flexibles has added its senior-friendly push-through Amcor Opening Feature (AOF) to child-resistant blister lidding.

According to Amcor, the push-through motion of AOF makes blister contents easier to access compared to the traditional peel or peel-push method most often used to achieve child resistance.

This achieves improvements in senior-friendliness, child-resistance, and sustainability.

AOF allows the use of a 2-ply structure compared with a standard 3-ply. The product contact layer remains the same as that of existing Amcor blister lidding products, helping users to streamline testing.

There is no need for peel tabs, so total package sizes can be reduced up to 40% versus traditional peel-push and peelable blister cards. Even with this significant reduction in material usage and weight, AOF maintains product stability with no compromise to the barrier layer or the seal integrity of the package.

An independent study in accordance with the requirements of 16 CFR Part 1700. This confirmed AOF’s senior friendliness and child resistance.

"Blisters were produced using AOF blister lidding and the package met the test requirements of F=1 (only two children out of 50 were able to access one cavity). In addition, the Senior Use Effectiveness (SAUE) score was an extraordinary 98% compared to the normal target minimum of 90%," Amcor reported.

AOF, which was already available on pouch stock and stick packs for the pharmaceutical market, was made commercially available on blister lidding products in December 2014.
