At FoodTech Qld last week, PKN caught up with John Pickering, technical sales manager at Proseal, and was treated to a quick demonstration of the company's new GTR semi-automatic two-station rotary-table tray sealing machine.

Capable of up 30 atmospheric packs per minute with a two-impression tool, the GTR machine is the workhorse of the ready meal industry. It is fully portable with automatic film-feed.

Reliable and easy to operate, the GTR is used around the world and has become a benchmark for portable sealing equipment.

Optional free-flow gas flush Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) is also available for extended shelf life, and the quick-release tooling allows the user to change from one tray size to another in less than two minutes.

Food & Drink Business

TasFoods Poultry division revenue fell 20 per cent in 1H25, with the company citing the continued oversupply of mainland sourced poultry in the Tasmanian and mainland market. The company reported a net loss after tax of $3.6 million, a 29 per cent improvement on FY24 prior corresponding period (pcp).

Maggie Beer Holdings (MBH) recorded a loss of $24.3 million in FY25, a marginal improvement on the $28.2 million in FY24. MBH chair, Mark Lindh said despite the loss, measures taken over the last six months have put the company in a good position for a strong 1H26.

After a difficult start to the year, including a CEO changeover, antibiotic backlash, and a loss of RSPCA certification, Huon Aquaculture is partnering with TasmaNet to deploy digital infrastructure and smart technology – aiming to drive innovation and sustainability in its salmon farming.
