At the CEO Leaders' Panel Breakfast on 19 May, part of the AUSPACK Leaders' Forum, Ego Pharmaceuticals CEO Alan Oppenheim will share insights on the company’s achievements in the packaging and processing sector.

For Australia’s leading skin care manufacturer Ego Pharmaceuticals, 2022 is shaping up well, with continued progress on its $25m Project Green Core and the exciting launch earlier this year of the etch&ethos sustainable skin care range.

Alan Oppenheim, who will participate at the AUSPACK Leaders' Forum conference on 19 May in the CEO Leaders' Panel Breakfast on Risk, Resilience and Rebalancing Organisations, will give attendees some insight into how this successful organisation is weathering the challenges Covid-19 has delivered, and where he sees opportunities lie for the business.

“Like many other businesses, Covid-19 has meant that Ego has had to contend with freight delays, supply issues and building shutdowns. However, thanks to our hardworking 'Egozites', we have been able to continue production therefore helping people around the world experiencing skin sensitivities,” Oppenheim says.

The company’s new range of natural, ethical and sustainable skincare, etch&ethos, has been a major highlight in the first quarter. Containing 94% naturally derived ingredients, all etch&ethos washes, lotions and refills are made in Melbourne, Australia with 50% recycled milk bottle plastic (rHDPE) incorporated in the packaging.

“The etch&ethos range is formulated in line with Ego’s ethos of science and quality, whilst minimising the mark we inevitably etch into the planet,” Oppenheim says.

He explains that to achieve this, etch&ethos partnered with Pact Group, one of the biggest packaging manufacturers in Australia, and worked together to design the packaging, helping divert around 200,000 used milk bottles from landfill.

Oppenheim says etch&ethos is also the first brand in Australia to have a label made from ForestFilm, a material made from paper manufacturing waste, supplied by UPM Raflatac.

He goes on to relate that Ego Pharmaceuticals is making continued progress with Project Green Core, a $25 million initiative which, when finished, will reduce electricity consumption used in manufacturing, with a goal to achieve carbon neutral manufacturing by 2030. Recent developments included a newly refurbished, upgraded packing hall with all new ceiling, new air handling units (less energy; better quality air for safer products), new low energy lights, new fire detection system and an upgraded filling line.

“We have recently launched Better Tomorrow – a campaign outlining our sustainability goals and how we'll be achieving them by following science's lead,” he says.

“At Ego Pharmaceuticals, we have always looked to science to guide our decisions. We know through science we can improve skin health and wellbeing and we can also improve the future for the planet and its people. By working closely with our incredible team as well as trusted suppliers and business partners, we have made significant progress towards our goals to reduce our impact on the planet. We strive to be a responsible, sustainable and successful part of a global community and encourage other businesses to do the same”.

Commenting on opportunities for growth, Oppenheim says: “We see our biggest opportunity as continuing to improve lives through the science of healthy skin. Now more than ever, people are experiencing increases in skin sensitivities and flare ups, plus general skin dryness from using sub-par products during increased handwashing.”

Oppenheim says he is looking forward to participating in the leaders Forum and visiting AUSPACK 2022, because it will provide “the opportunity to connect with and learn from likeminded leaders in the industry. There is so much exciting progress happening in this space”.

Join Alan Oppenheim and other CEO panellists on 19 May at the CEO Leaders Panel Breakfast. Oppenheim will be joined by Diem Fuggersburger, founder and CEO of Berger Ingredients, and Dean Carroll, CEO of Brown Family Wines. The panel will be chaired by Kate Whitehead of Avant Group.
