Popit Recycling’s milk bottle recycling system has won Gold in the Engineering Design category at the 2026 Australian Good Design Awards, recognising its approach to recovering HDPE bottles for food-grade recycling.

Designed and manufactured in Australia, the system combines dedicated bottle collection with compact, modular processing to address contamination, traceability and cost barriers in milk bottle recycling. Its design partners are Pulseweld Engineering Services and Richard Ferlazzo Design Consulting.

The awards jury recognised the commercial thinking behind the system, describing it as “a compelling and commercially grounded innovation that addresses a significant challenge in food-grade plastic recycling”.

Popit’s take-back model enables food-service businesses, including cafés and restaurants, to return empty milk bottles in their original delivery crates to the originating dairy. Keeping bottles within this dedicated recovery stream reduces the contamination risks associated with mixed recycling collections.

The modular processing system accepts unwashed bottles and integrates sorting, washing, shredding, drying and packaging into a continuous process. It produces clean, hot-washed HDPE flakes ready for conversion into pellets for new bottle production. Its compact footprint enables installation at dairies with in-house bottle manufacturing facilities.

According to Popit, the combination of controlled collection and lower-cost processing enables food-grade recycled HDPE to reach price parity with virgin resin.

The jury identified this cost outcome as central to the system’s potential adoption, commending “the team's achievement in reaching price parity with virgin material, which is critical to meaningful environmental adoption at scale”.

The Good Design recognition follows gold in the Outside of the Box Design category at the 2026 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design Awards. That award recognised the same Milk Bottle Recycling System developed by Popit Recycling in partnership with Martogg and Procal Dairies, which PKN previously covered for its approach to bringing recovery and reprocessing closer to dairy production.
