PKN talks... PREP-aration for change: the role of the PREP tool in assessing packaging recyclability and its support of the Australasian Recycling Label, with Anthony Peyton, co-founder and director of PREP Design.

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, and Anthony Peyton, co-founder and director of PREP Design, discuss the PREP tool, its use in the industry and how it supports the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL).

We start the discussion with a look at the PREP online tool which assists packaging designers determine whether a component of their packaging can be recycled. Available to all Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) members, the PREP tool has assessed over 90,000 packaging items which represent approximately 60,000 products. The tool has become an industry standard with support from industry and retailers, all of which have helped drive its adoption by designers.

We also discuss how PREP and the ARL are helping Australia respond to bans on the export of waste along with observations about further improving the adoption of PREP by designers. This leads to a review of APCO's support for the PREP tool, the efforts of its technical advisory committee providing support for the ARL, and the testing being performed to improve the PREP tool's simulations.

The episode wraps with a look at the education and training available via the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) for the PREP tool and the ARL along with a view to their future directions.

Food & Drink Business

Fonterra has announced Anna Palairet is the new chief operating officer, having acted in the role since June 2023. CEO Miles Hurrell says Palairet has “extensive experience in operational, customer, sustainability, and sales roles”.

Food & Drink Business editor Kim Berry's take on the big news stories this week, and what caught her eye overseas. How will the Future Made in Australia Act actually be delivered? Shanghai trials traffic light labelling, and Solar Food, making protein out of (virtually) nothing at all, opens its commercial scale facility (that's it in the pic).

Food Frontier’s industry leading annual alternative proteins conference, AltProteins 24, is on in Melbourne on 10 October, with early bird tickets now available.
