PKN talks... intelligent packaging and automation with Andrew Steele from GS1 and Jean-Michel Maclou from SICK Sensor Intelligence.

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, Andrew Steele, director for retail at GS1 and Jean-Michel Maclou, industry sales manager for logistics automation from SICK, discuss intelligent packaging at all levels in the packaged goods supply chain.

The discussion starts with the origins and development of the humble barcode with its associated standards, expansion into 2D barcodes and the use of RFID tags. Andrew and Jean-Michel explain how these technologies are allowing product packaging to provide more information to consumers ranging from provenance, freshness and recyclability.

We then move on to smart packaging assisting with sustainability, the circular economy and new technical developments, such as the SICK Lector series - image based code readers, that help with quality control. This then leads to a discussion about the future of packaging technology including its role in supply chain analytics, operational improvements and supporting robot operations.

The episode wraps up with views from both guests on what to expect from the immediate future with smart packaging.
